Are NFT royalties guaranteed once I set them?
No. A contract can state a royalty rate and a payee, but most marketplaces choose whether to honour it. Plan your income with that in mind.
No. Setting a royalty in your contract tells marketplaces what you would like to receive on resales and where to send it. Paying it is a choice each marketplace makes, and policies differ and shift.
What you control
- The rate your contract reports
- The address that receives payments
- Whether you can update either later
- The licence terms buyers agree to
What you don’t control
- Whether a marketplace reads the royalty setting at all
- Private sales or transfers that bypass marketplaces
- Changes to marketplace policy after launch
Planning around it
Treat resale royalties as a possible bonus, not a salary. Price your primary sale so the project works without them. If ongoing income matters, think about other models such as later editions, holder perks or commissions.
Pick a payee address you will still control years from now. A multi-signature wallet suits collaborations.
